In a study conducted at the University of Guelph, Ontario, Buzz Away was proven to be 2-3 times more effective than other natural repellents, even 3 hours after application. Researchers stated that "the protection provided by Buzz Away is not statistically different from the protection provided by OFF! Skintastic." Skintastic uses the chemical DEET as its active ingredient.

Compared to DEET products, DEET-free products generally need to be applied more frequently. Classified as a pesticide, DEET, or diethyl-meta-toluamide, can be found in most over-the-counter insect repellents.

DEET has been proven to enter the bloodstream through application to the skin, and while many people use DEET-based products without incident, others have suffered side-effects ranging from rashes and hives to uncontrollable twitching and muscle spasms to death.
