Earth Day 2010 Survey - Results
In advance of Earth Day 2010, we took the opportunity to conduct a survey to gain a better understanding of the thoughts and habits surrounding greener living of consumers in our market. The online survey was conducted between March 31 and April 12, 2010 and 350 respondents across Canada and the US took part.
Survey findings include:
- nearly 2 out of 3 respondents (65%) said their own health and welfare is just as important as that of the environment when making a purchase
- close to one third (31%) said they themselves are the top priority over the environment
- 60% of respondents rated natural/non-toxic as an extremely important factor when buying a product; this figure jumped to 77% when asked about buying products for children
- less than half (45%) of respondents rated environmental friendliness as an extremely important factor when making a purchasing decision
- 46% of respondents would pay up to 20% more for an eco-friendly product that is biodegradable or made of recycled material over its conventional counterpart
- more than a third (37%) would spend up to 50% more for a natural/non-toxic product that is chemical-free or made of natural material
- 89% of respondents support a ban on plastic shopping bags in their city
- 88% own more than five reusable shopping bags or baskets
- 63% turned off their lights for Earth Hour on March 26th
- 94% almost always recycle
