Money-Saving Back to School Shopping Tips

5 Ways to Save with Back to School Shopping

Going back to school can be an education itself - a great opportunity to teach your kids about making choices that are good for them and the planet too.

With back to school shopping, like everything else, budget is a natural consideration. If you want to, there are always ways to save. Here are five of our top tips to help you save money when shopping for back to school.

  1. Go through last year's school supplies and take an inventory of the supplies you already have. Check the pens, pastels, etc. that were returned to your child at the end of June. You may be surprised at how much you can re-use. *Don't forget to take stock of the lunch gear you use daily throughout the school year. Get rid of containers with no lids, consider replacing plastics with healthier stainless steel containers.
  2. Write a shopping list of the supplies you need and when shopping, be sure to stick to it. This helps avoid potentially unnecessary impulse buys and succumbing to any pestering by the kids for products they don't need.
  3. Look out for coupons and online discount codes. (Sign up for our newsletter or become a fan on our Facebook page and you'll receive exclusive discount codes for Lavish & Lime.) Go through the fliers in your local newspaper and keep an eye out for e-newsletter specials from online stores. This is a great way to save, but be sure not to leave everything to the last minute because items will go out of stock.
  4. Shop smartly. You might be getting a real deal on that pack of pencil crayons at the dollar store, but will you be buying another whole pack in January because they all broke? Newspaper pencils are tightly wound around the lead for extra protection against breakage and although they may cost a bit more, they last 2-3 times longer than regular pencils. Buying quality is always something to keep in mind, as it often results in savings in the long run.
  5. Don't stop shopping. (And we're not just saying this because we're a shop!) Look for deals on back to school items throughout the year, including reusable waste-free lunch gear, and you'll keep saving.

At Lavish & Lime you’ll find a great selection of eco-friendly back to school products - from must-have waste free lunch gear to virtually unbreakable pencils made from recycled newspapers.
