Not only does making pencils from old newspapers help preserve our forests, but the process of rolling newspaper around graphite instead of encasing it in wood means that the graphite is far better protected. In comparison, merely dropping a wood pencil on the floor can result in the graphite splintering and cracking. This is why O'Bon confidently states that their pencils often last 2-3 times longer than conventional wood pencils.
The O'Bon factory is low on the energy consumption scale of producing pencils. Unlike wood pencils, there are no trees to chop, no wood slates to grind and no hexagonal shape to cut by grinding wood.
Their philosophy is simple: Take a common school item, such as a pencil, and turn it into something exciting, something special, and something different. They strive to end the days when pencils came in bland colors, broke constantly and consumed valuable environmental resources.
